While We Were Sleeping
Hey, I said it was supposed to be a slow few days for news! What's the big idea having all these major stories occur while I was eating my burgers? Well, I probably won't have time for any in-depth blogging until tomorrow, but here is a quick-round of big stories that broke while we were celebrating our independence...
There's a still a war going on in Iraq.
And one in Afghanistan too!
North Korea test-fired a series of long-range missiles. The missiles failed shortly after launch. The international community condemned this move. The White House called the missile tests "a provocation" but not an immediate threat. Well of course not, North Korea doesn't have oil.
Enron founder, and former Bush ally, Ken Lay has died of a heart attack, just six weeks after being convicted in the massive Enron fraud scandal. He was 64 years old.
Sen. Lieberman, to no one's surprise, has stabbed the Democratic party in the back... he has announced that he is planning an Independent run for his Senate seat should he lose next month's Democratic primary against challenger Ned Lamont. Lieberman is working on this Independent run (collecting signatures) , while simultaneously campaigning for the primary, a move that is concerning many Democrats. It may also be the reason that the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has reversed course and announced that they will support the primary winner, whoever that ends up being.
Seymour Hersh continues his Iran reporting by revealing that senior members of the military hierachy are dissenting against the President's hawkish policy toward Iran. At issues are concerns over the that fact that "agencies have not found specific evidence of clandestine activities or hidden facilities" as well as the "serious economic, political, and military consequences for the United States" from a preemptive attack.
In other news, the Palestinians and Israelis still hate each other.
Is President Bush willing to flip-flop on immigration reform to help the House in this election year?
Finally, the CIA has closed the unit that has focused on bin Laden for a decade. I guess they're truly not that concerned about him either.

Lieberman is doing the right thing, he has no choice but to back himself up in case he loses the primary. It's the creeps at Daily Kos that have stabbed Lieberman in the back and are trying to chase him out of the Democrat party, Ned Lamont is just a smaller version of George Soros, all style, no substance, lots of cash and a serious hatred for George W. Bush.
Nice screenname! :D
Anyway, how is what Lieberman is doing the 'right thing'? That logic only works if you believe he has some sort of right to that Senate seat. He does not. No politician, no incumbent, has a right to their site. Primary challenges to sitting Senators are not uncommon (Specter-Toomey in 2004 got a lot of publicity). They should occur more often, if anything. It's democracy at its strongest.
Joe Lieberman is a Democrat (in registration, anyway). Therefore, it is up to the Democratic voters of Connecticut if they want to put him on the ballot in November. They may yet choose him, the race is close. But if he as loyal to the Democratic party as he claims, he should respect the voters' decision, not insult them as he has with numerous statements implying they are fools or thugs for daring to support anyone besides him.
And it is insulting to Democratic voters to be running an Independent run while also demanding unequivocal support from DC Dems for his Democratic primary run.
His ego is what is hurting him most in this race, among other factors. He has worked against the Democratic party on a number of big issues (such as Social Security in 2005) and voters have been paying attention.
Connecticut voters are not happy with his performance in the Senate... don't blame Daily Kos, George Soros, or any of the other liberal boogeymen the right rants about.
As Andrew Sullivan said in March, "you only have to watch O'Reilly or read Powerline or listen to Sean Hannity or David Horowitz to know that the only thing that really gets them fired up any more is loathing of liberals. The only way the GOP base will be motivated to vote for an incompetent, exhausted, fiscally insane administration is if they get to vote against "libruls". Michael Moore, the Daily Kos, Paul Krugman, George Clooney, et al. are therefore the GOP's last, best hope this fall... My gut predicts a huge swing against the GOP this fall. So watch out for the anti-left hate and hysteria from Republicans. It's coming. It's all they've got left."
In conclusion, if Sen. Lieberman wants to win the primary (and he has a good shot), he should defend himself based on his record (which, of course, got him in this mess) and his personal character... and not simply complain about having to even do so at all.
The more he whines (and the more Republicans rush to his defense), the more he throws votes to Lamont.
