Happy Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week!

The right-wing base continues to devolve deeper into self-parody (c'mon guys, you're gonna put Stephen Colbert and The Onion out of jobs!). They have declared this to be.... Islamo-Fascism Awareness Week. It's the demagogue-iest time of the year!

Internment camp fangirl Michelle Malkin is all over it. There's even a website with local events! TPM's Josh Marshall gives us a thrilling overview-

(And it turns out many of the participating universities... aren't participating! How sad.)

Balloon Juice's Tim F. says better than I could why this is so ridiculous, and dangerous-
"Reading through a typical rightwing blog or speech by 9/11-humping candidates like Giuliani you get the impression that they have no idea that al Qaeda is a Sunni movement that detests Shiites and secular Arab leaders as much as they detest us, that Zarqawi spent most of AQI’s energy attacking the Shiite community, that Iran and the Sunni Arab world view one another with thinly veiled hostility...

...This is not a trivial point. Our true enemies, in the sense of the people who attacked us unprovoked, represent a small minority of hardened extremists. Their long-term strategy and even their very survival depends on mainstreaming their radical ideas into a broader Arab movement. To the degree that we nurture the modernist and moderate factions of Muslim society and emphasize the differences between them and the cave-dwelling nuts, al Qaeda loses. But to the degree that we lump all of Islam into a mistrusted category that gets strip searched, disappeared, tortured and denounced without discrimination bin Laden’s fringe movement wins big time...

...So yes, an Islamofascism Awareness Week sounds like a fine idea. Maybe one day we should have one."

But, but... dhimmitude! Caliphate! 9/11 9/11 crusadelikezeal!! {*head explodes*}

[PS- John Mcquaid notes ways in which The Onion and 'South Park' are satirizing all this.]

A great many Westerners do not see the clear distinction between Islam and Islamism (Islamofascism).

I hope that you realize that the people you are congratulating up there don't care about that distinction either. But rather they-

1) Simply demagogue this issue as way of egomaniacal self-promotion for their pet cause... their own bruised egos.

2) Use this issue as a context for starting more preemptive military actions which they support because... well, who the knows at this point.

Dirty fucking liberals like me have been trying to make clear the very distinctions you point out above for years now. The ones who truly see no distinctions? The right-wing assholes who created this awareness week.

That statement "I hope that you realize that the people you are congratulating up there don't care about that distinction either."

That statement must be based on your extensive experience, but our research shows the opposite.

"Dirty fucking liberals like me have been trying to make clear the very distinctions you point out above for years now. The ones who truly see no distinctions? The right-wing assholes who created this awareness week."

This is great. However, it is an unfortunate fact that the Islamofascism Awareness Week is hosted by college Republicans, not college Democrats.

From posts and comment in the blogosphere, it is pretty clear that the Left is a lot less educated on the subject than the Right. There are plenty of insane people on both sides of the political spectrum, however, we consider the organizers of the IAW quite sane and worthy of our praise and support.

Yes, but they couldn't care less about Islam. They *hate* Islam.

I made clear in my comment above why these Republicans are pimping this issue and it has nothing to do with "reforming" Islam. To them, the only way to reform it is to destroy it.

You are stating your opinion like it's a fact. We happen to disagree with your opinion. We believe that we are a lot more familiar with their works than you are, and we are in a better position to make an educated judgment.

"To them, the only way to reform it is to destroy it."

We believe they want to destroy Islamofascism. Islamofascists are the ones who are bent on world domination, which bring about destruction of Islam.

We also believe that your ideology clods your judgment. Since we are free from hating the Right or hating the Left, we can see a clearer picture.

Well, this is pure BS.

Your site is clearly a shill for the American right-wing, as evidenced by the fact that there is a post condemning Barack Obama for not doing the national anthem correctly... which last time I checked, was unrelated to islam or sharia. You've got Pamela Geller writing for your blog and she was any further to the right, she'd fall off the political map.

I see the picture quite clearly... Either your site is a fake, or you have allowed your message of reformed to be hijacked (pardon the pun) by right-wing ideologues. Either way is sad.

Like a good little idiot, I’m sorry, ideologue, you are used to living in your echo chamber and see only what you want to see. Original Obama post was about his al-Qaeda-wanna-be supporter. Obama violating federal law was an icing on the cake.

We have Pamela Geller as a blog contributor, but we also have Dave McKeegan.

Left-wing morons blame us for anti-Obama postings (http://muslimsagainstsharia.blogspot.com/2007/09/muslims-against-sharia-call-on-senator.html) and right-wing morons blame us for pro-Pelosi postings (http://muslimsagainstsharia.blogspot.com/2007/10/armenian-genocide-bill.html)

There are people on both sides of the spectrum that are not blinded by their idiocy, I mean ideology, but you are not one of them.

"I was banned from the LJ community for Obama '08 over... this."

That's what you get when people choose ideology over reason. People at Obama '08 cannot fathom that a different opinion is not necessarily wrong. But you are no different, than them in thinking that anything that comes from the Right is automatically bad. No, that you have tasted your own medicine of herd mentality, you might want to re-evaluate you're your narrow mindedness.

Are you still here?

Shouldn't you be protesting somewhere to stop the coming Caliphate that will consume America and force all our women into burkas?

Sharia is not going to defeat itself, you know.

You are hopeless. Smart people learn from somebody else’s mistakes; stupid people learn from their own. Total idiots can’t even learn from their own mistakes. Let’s get back to this conversation after the next 9/11.
