Furious mobs of rioters stormed and set ablaze the building housing the Danish consulate in Beirut in protests against controversial cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed.

Lebanon's interior minister announced his resignation after acknowledging that security forces had failed to control the violence despite the presence of a large number of riot police with shields, gas masks and helmets who initially used tear gas and batons to try to keep the protestors at bay...
